Semantic Data Models and Concepts – A Comparison of IFO and COMIC

In information modelling and conceptual modelling, many different approaches have been proposed for a general design framework in which knowledge can be represented. Often, these approaches are related with Semantic Data Models. In this paper, we compare two of these approaches, one used in the IFO model and one used in COMIC methodology. Both IFO and COMIC can be seen as semantic data models and provide a general design framework for knowledge representation. The purpose of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, we clarify the terminology (especially of concepts, types and definitions) in IFO and COMIC and point out the similarities. On the other hand, based on these similarities, the possibility of transforming a COMIC schema into a IFO schema becomes apparent. This translation would bring together the good sides of both the approaches: a support for the process of conceptual modelling in COMIC and the mathematical sophistication in IFO.
